Our Services
Dr Sophia Richardson is trained in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a subspecialisation and a passion for Orthognathic (Corrective Jaw) Surgery.
-
Surgery of the chin, upper or lower jaw, to align the jaws into a better position. This may be for cosmetic reasons or as treatment for some breathing disorders. This treatment will usually involve an orthodontist as well, to make sure the teeth are aligned as well as the jaws.
-
Problematic wisdom teeth may need to be surgically removed. You can decide if you prefer this performed “fully asleep”, under a general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic at her consulting rooms in Fitzroy North.
-
Some teeth are difficult to remove and are best treated by a specialist. This may be because of the shape of the tooth, or due to medical conditions that mean extra care is needed.
-
An implant can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.
It is made up of two parts - the titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone, and the tooth (crown) that is then attached to the screw.
Dr Sophia Richardson places the screw into the jaw and makes sure the bone has healed. You can then return to your dentist to place the crown.
-
A tooth may remain unerupted or impacted (does not fully grow into the correct position in the mouth), and need to be exposed to allow it to move into place.
-
Benign lumps and swellings such as small cysts, mucoceles and polyps can be surgically removed. This also includes releasing tongue ties.
-
Exostoses are benign lumps in the jaw bone which may sometimes need to be surgically removed.
-
Some lesions inside the jaw bone require surgical treatment.
-
Grafting may be required to replace damaged bone or soft tissue.

When would it be more suitable to see a different specialist?
Some conditions are best managed without surgery, and should be seen by an Oral Medicine Specialist. These may include:
Recurrent or widespread ulcers
Oral mucosal diseases (e.g., inflammatory or autoimmune conditions)
Longstanding or recurring oral lesions
Dry mouth
Salivary gland problems or stones
Nerve-related oral or facial pain
Facial Fractures
Dr Sophia Richardson is able to consult regarding these issues, but they are typically managed by other subspecialists:
TMJ issues (after conservative management, surgical cases only)
Complex pathology/tumours requiring tertiary care
Complex facial trauma requiring hospital-based multidisciplinary care
“I strive to provide exceptional, compassionate, and patient-centered care, where everyone is empowered to make an informed decision based on their individual needs.”
